A barrister since 1980, Graham Ellis SC holds senior ranking in three professions. He is:

  • A silk at the New South Wales Bar
  • A Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, and
  • A Fellow of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants.

Graham has practised law in many countries on the Pacific Rim, including Australia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Malaysia. He appears in all of Australia's superior courts and is also regularly involved in commissions of inquiry. Graham also works as an arbitrator and mediator, having recently introduced mediation as a means of dealing with the disputes in schools.

Career highlights

Graham served with John Coombs QC as counsel assisting the Evatt (Agent Orange) Royal Commission (1983-85) and assisted the Bar Association’s work which led to the introduction of the Motor Accidents Act. From 1990 to 1992 he served as a Supreme Court judge in PNG and chaired the Leadership Tribunal which considered 86 charges of corruption brought against the then Deputy Prime Minister of PNG. In 1992, he conducted the Poreporena Freeway Commission of Inquiry in PNG.

Other interests

Graham has a particular interest in fostering poverty relief projects in the Philippines.
